Governor to make viaduct announcement tomorrow.

January 12th, 2009 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Governors Office

Tomorrow morning, Gov. Chris Gregoire will appear with King County Executive Ron Sims, City of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Seattle Tay Yoshitani.

They’ll announce the plan to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct. As we posted earlier, the Seattle Times and P-I both report that a tunnel is the option of choice.

I won’t be at the 8:30 a.m. meeting at Seattle’s World Trade Center, but TVW will: We’ll air it tomorrow evening. I’ll update the time here as soon as I know it. And, of course, you can check in here for more info tomorrow.

As the swearing-in continues, some Viaduct news

January 12th, 2009 by Niki Reading | No Comments | Filed in Public Policy, WA House, WA Senate

Right now, the House and Senate are simultaneously swearing in their members: 62 Democrats and 36 Republicans in the House, 31 Democrats and 18 Republicans in the Senate. You can watch the whole thing at TVW.org or (after a brief time off-air due to a cable problem) on TV.

The swearing in kicks off a 105-day countdown until the end of (regularly scheduled) session.

Meanwhile, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and The Seattle Times are both reporting that the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be replaced by a deep-bore tunnel.

We expect an official announcement — and more details, like where the money will come from — tomorrow. In the meantime, back to the swearing-in.
